INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Two more school records fell on Saturday morning, the final day of preliminaries of the 2009 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
Josh Schneider set his third school- and meet-record time of the meet in the preliminaries of the 100 freestyle. The junior timed in at 43.14, topping his own UC mark of 43.48, and surpassing Louisville's Andrei Radzionau's meet-record clocking of 43.27, set a year ago. Schneider's time earns him the top seed in Saturday night's championship final, and also makes the NCAA 'B' cut.
Schneider had previously set earned a pair of BIG EAST individual crowns as well as setting UC and meet records in the 100 butterfly, and 50 freestyle. His 50 freestyle time was under the NCAA 'A' standard and his 100 butterfly met the NCAA 'B' cut. He also swam the freestyle leg on UC's 400-medley relay team that set a school record and met the NCAA 'B' time cut Friday.
Elinore de Jong broke Cat Cooper's 21-year old school record in the 100 freestyle. De Jong had a school-record and NCAA 'B' time of 49.71 to earn the No. 4 seed in Saturday's championship final. Cooper's time of 50.13 was set on Feb. 25, 1988. De Jong also met the NCAA 'B' standard in the 100 butterfly on Friday.
Jeremy Peter qualified as the No. 3 seed in the 200 breaststroke championship final after clocking 2:00.32 in the preliminaries. Jakub Carda (2:02.58), and Rob Langford (2:06.39) grabbed spots in the consolation final.
Karli Kentner (2:19.78), Stephanie Conklin (2:20.36), and Erin Mullins (2:20.83) all qualified for the consolation final in the 200 breaststroke.
Shannon McCarthy clocked 2:02.78 in the 200 backstroke to narrowly miss qualifying for the consolation final. She earned the first alternate spot.
Nick Saul had a time of 1:51.65 in the men's 200 backstroke to earn a spot in the consolation final.
Laurie Caudy finished in 2:06.79 in the 200 butterfly prelims to earn the second alternate spot.
