ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Sophomore outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) and junior outfielder Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) were named to the 2009 BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge All-Tournament Team, CollegeBaseball360.com announced Sunday evening. The all-tournament teams were selected by CollegeBaseball360.com with input from coaches and sports information directors.
Riddell opened the tournament with a 4-for-4 performance against Purdue, which included two home runs and two doubles. Riddell followed that outing going 2-for-4 from the plate versus Michigan, and 2-for-5 against Ohio State. For the week Riddell hit .615, scored four runs, collected four RBI, two doubles and three home runs. Riddell led the tournament in home runs (3), total bases (19), and slugging percentage (1.462), while tying for the tournament lead in batting average (.615). Riddell also ranked second among all players in on-base percentage (.643) and hits (8).
Scott was impressive in all facets of the game during the tournament. Scott hit .500 for the week, went 3-for-3 in stolen bases, and arguably had the top defensive play in the tournament. In the fourth inning against Michigan, Scott raced back to the warning track and made an over-the-shoulder catch while slamming into the wall. For the week, Scott ranked in the Top 10 in batting average, hits, doubles, total bases, and stolen bases.
The Bearcats return to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 27, when they travel to Davidson, N.C., to play a doubleheader against Georgetown and Davidson. UC plays Georgetown at 2 p.m., before playing Davidson at 6 p.m. UC then plays Georgetown again on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m., before playing Penn at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 1. All games will be played at Wilson Field on the Davidson College campus.
Since the Bearcats and Hoyas do not meet in BIG EAST play, both games against Georgetown count as non-conference contests.
