CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati tennis team was defeated, 5-2, by Syracuse University in its BIG EAST Conference season opener on Friday at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
Freshman Jessica Wise and senior Elizabeth Young earned the two points for the Bearcats, winning the fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Wise knocked off Syracuse's Simone Kalhorn, earning a straight-set victory, 6-3, 7-5. Young battled through a three-set match, taking the first and third sets to tie breaks and coming away with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Chelsea Jones.
The Bearcats had an opportunity to win the match as freshman Ksenia Slykno and Valeriya Dandik each took their singles match to third sets.
UC (2-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) returns to the court on Sunday, Feb. 8 with a non-conference match-up at Bowling Green State University. The match starts at 1 p.m.
