BALTIMORE - Lindsey Marshall (Hilliard, Ohio/Ohio) scored four goals and had one assist but the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team lost, 18-9, to No. 13/19 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field. Cincinnati (3-1) ended its three-game win streak while the Blue Jays (2-2) snapped a two-game losing skid.
Johns Hopkins scored just 11 seconds into the game and tacked on a free position goal before Marshall scored an unassisted goal for the Bearcats. Hopkins scored two unanswered goals when UC countered on a Blue Jays attack and Marshall scored her second goal of the game with 17:24 remaining in the period. Natalie Starvaggi (Loveland, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) brought the Bearcats within one, 4-3, with an unassisted goal just 1:04 later but Hopkins responded with three straight goals to take a 7-4 lead. Marshall put her second hat trick of the season in the back of the net at the 8:47 mark of the first period but the Blue Jays added two more goals, pushing their lead to 9-4 at halftime.
The Blue Jays continued their scoring to start the second period, adding two goals before Marshall scored her fourth goal of the game with 27:19 to go in the final period. Down 12-6, Lynsey Burton (Smithtown, N.Y./Ohio) scored an unassisted goal, MacKenzie Parsons (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored off a feed from Marshall and Lauren Houck (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) found the back of the net on an assist from Laura Simanski (Reisterstown, Md./Roland Park), pulling the Bearcats closer, 12-8, with 19:21 remaining. JHU scored on a free position attempt and Simanski put a goal on the scoreboard for UC two minutes later, but the Bearcats were unable to score again and the Blue Jays scored five additional goals to end the period.
Katherine Russo (Westminster, Md./Winters Mills) had 10 saves in goal for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati will play its home opener on Sunday, March 8 at 11:30 a.m. in Nippert Stadium. The Bearcats will play Villanova and the two teams will wear special warm-up jerseys prior to the game to signify their support of the charitable organization, Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ), and to help raise public awareness about pediatric brain tumors.
