HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Cincinnati's Kahla Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and Shanasa Sanders (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault Senior) earned BIG EAST awards, announced Thursday by the conference on the eve of the 2009 BIG EAST Championship. Roudebush was named to the all-BIG EAST second team, while Sanders earned a spot on the league's all-freshman team.
Roudebush, who led the Bearcats and ranked ninth in the BIG EAST in scoring at 16.3 points per game, scored in double figures in all but four games this season. She became the 23rd in school history to record 1,000 career points in the regular season finale against DePaul on March 2. Roudebush is fifth in school history in career three-point field goals and second in three-point percentage. She led the BIG EAST in minutes played, averaging 38.3 minutes per game.
Sanders, who started every game of her freshman campaign at point guard, averaged 7.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 33.5 minutes per game. She scored a career-high 25 points with nine rebounds and four assists against Seton Hall on Jan. 17, earning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Honors. She played 40 or more minutes six times this season, and averaged 37.1 minutes per game in conference play.
Roudebush is the second UC player to earn all-BIG EAST honors, following Treasure Humphries, who was named to the second team following the 2005-06 season. Sanders is the third Bearcat to earn all-freshman honors, following Shelly Bellman in 2005-06, and Carla Jacobs in 2006-07.
The Bearcats open the 2009 BIG EAST Championship on March 6 at 2 p.m. against Marquette in the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
