CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati football team will participate in opening day festivities for the Cincinnati Reds, on April 6, 2009, at Great American Ball Park.
Head coach Brian Kelly, the football team, cheerleaders, band, and Bearcat will all participate in activities throughout the day. The Reds are scheduled to open the home slate against the New York Mets at 1:10 p.m. Monday.
"It's an honor for our team to take part in such a great Cincinnati tradition," Kelly said. "We're very happy to be included, and look forward to representing the Department of Athletics, and the University with pride."
To start off the day, Coach Kelly, the Bearcat Caravan, UC Cheerleaders, and Bearcat will participate in the 90th Findlay Market Opening Day Parade that begins at 10:30 a.m. The group of Bearcats will be in the parade alongside Grand Marshall Frank Robinson, a former Reds great.
Members of the football team will hold a giant American flag in the outfield during the singing of our National Anthem.
Coach Kelly will then deliver the official game ball to the pitching mound for Reds opening day starter Aaron Harang.
A moment of silence will be held in honor of Glenn Sample, longtime Reds official scorer and UC sports icon who passed away on Nov. 21, 2008. The Reds will officially dedicate the Official Scorer's Booth of the ballpark in Sample's honor.
The Bearcats Pep Band will perform on the field prior to the game and then play Take Me Out To The Ballgame during the seventh-inning stretch.
The Bearcat Caravan will have a booth set up at the game to distribute 2009 season ticket information, and football promotional materials.
