CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team continues its spring season on Saturday, April 11, when the Bearcats travel to Lexington, Ky. to play in a three-team round-robin tournament hosted by the University of Kentucky. The Wildcats will first host Marshall University at 12:30 p.m. ET Saturday afternoon, before Marshall and Cincinnati take the court in the second match of the day, approximately at 2:30 p.m.. The final match of the day features the Bearcats and the Wildcats at 4 p.m. ET. Admission to this weekend's tournament is free.
Last weekend, the Bearcats fared well against Saint Louis University, Eastern Kentucky University, and Western Michigan University at the Ohio Valley Center spring collegiate tournament.
"We will see both Western Michigan and Saint Louis this fall, so these matches were a great gage on where we are as a team right now and where we need to be come September. said assistant coach Erin Virtue. "There is still progress to be made, but I like the direction that we are headed."
Junior Jaime Frey and sophomore Julie Guenther stood out on the defensive end of the floor, while sophomore Stephanie Niemer continued her strong play from the end of the season.
"As a staff, we were very pleased with our defensive effort, led by Jaime Frey and Julie Guenther," added Virtue. "Niemer took on a major leadership role as the team's dominant attacker during over the weekend and the chemistry between Niemer and setter Annie Fesl was very good."
Following this weekend, the Bearcats play a scrimmage against back-to-back National Champions Penn State in Pittsburgh, Pa on Saturday, April 18.
