LEXINGTON, Ky. - Alberto Fernandez (Gijorn, Spain/La Corolla) finished fifth to lead the University of Cincinnati men's golf team at the University of Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational on Easter Sunday (April 12) at the UK Big Blue Golf Course.
Fernandez finished five over par after rounds of 73-73-75=221 on 6,992-yard, par-72 layout. He tied with Blayne Barber of UCF and Stewart Jamieson of Ohio at 221.
Joe Kastelic (Newton, N.C./Fred T. Foard) fared well in the first two rounds, but faded down the stretch with a third-round 82 to finish in a tie for 46th. Kastelic shot rounds of 75-76-82=233 to tie with four other golfers at 17 over par.
The Bearcats finished 15th after rounds of 303-310-328=941, one shot behind Dayton (311-311-318=940) and three shots behind 13th-place Jacksonville (317-302-319=938). Host Kentucky won the team title with rounds of 297-285-298=880.
Austin Peay's Erik Barnes won the individual title at one under par (72-76-67=215). He posted the low round of the tournament, a five-under 67 during Sunday's final round. Ohio's Chad Warmbein was three shots back in second place after shooting 75-71-72=218.
UC will take on Xavier in the Crosstown Shootout on Thursday, April 16, at Maketewah Country Club. The Bearcats will then head to the BIG EAST Championships, which get underway on April 18 with a practice round and conclude with the final round on Tuesday, April 21, at the Lake Jovita South Course in Dade City, Fla.
