CINCINNATI - The Red team earned a 69-37 victory over the White team in Bearcat Bowl III at Nippert Stadium on Saturday night in front of 12,491 fans, a Bearcat Bowl attendance record.
The scoring system for Bearcat Bowll III awarded points to both the offense and defense for attaining specific plays. The point system was as follows: Offense: Touchdown = 6 points, Field goal = 3, Extra point = 1, Every first down = 1, 4th down conversion = 2 points. Defense: Score = 9 points, Safety = 2, Missed field goal = 3, Missed extra point = 1, Every third down stop = 1, Fourth down stop = 2, Turnover = 3, TFL or sack = 1.
The Red team scored two touchdowns in the first half and led, 34-27. Tony Pike threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Ben Guidugli in the first quarter and Zach Collaros, on his first attempt of the game, threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dan Milligan. The Red had two field goals in the first half, a 47-yarder from Jake Rogers and a successful 32-yard attempt from Milligan.
The White stayed in the game with two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery from Ricardo Mathews. Demetrius Jones had a tackle for loss and J.K. Shaffer and Marcus Waugh shared a tackle for loss.
In the second half, the Red team scored three touchdowns and recorded a field goal. Darrin Williams scored one a 1-yard run in the third quarter. Chazz Anderson threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Armon Binns and Brendon Kay tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Adrien Robinson, both in the fourth quarter. Milligan connected on a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Tony Pike finished the game 25-of-35 with 210 yards and one touchdown. Collaros completed 9-of-13 for 146 yards and Anderson was 5-of-10 with 48 yards. Brendon Kay completed all five passes he attempted and finished with 56 passing yards.
Shaffer and Waugh finished with seven tackles apiece for the game. Mathews led the way with two sacks while Derek Wolfe and Steve Hancock each recorded one and Dan Giordano and Alex Daniels shared a sack.
Binns and Guidugli each grabbed seven receptions on the night, finishing with 74 and 59 receiving yards, respectively. Isaiah Pead led the way on the ground, finishing with 35 rushing yards on 13 carries. Jake Rogers, Michael Cooke and Mark Tabar each recorded punts. Rogers landed a 52-yard punt and averaged 42.8 yards on four attempts. Cooke hit a 47 yard punt and averaged 44.7 yards on three attempts.
The Bearcats will open the 2009 season on Monday, Sept. 7, in a 4 p.m. game at Rutgers.
