CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team closed out its spring season with a 2-0 win against Ohio State as part of the annual Blue Chip Showcase in Gettler Stadium on Saturday (April 25) night.
The Bearcats finished the spring season undefeated with a 5-0-4 mark.
"On the night, I don't think we necessarily played our best soccer but we scored two opportunistic goals and kept a clean sheet," head coach Hylton Dayes said. "Based on the result, you have to give the guys credit. I thought Mark Konitsch had a good game, he was involved in both of our goals and defended well in the first half as our left back. Special mention should also go to the defenders and goalkeepers, they limited Ohio State's scoring opportunities especially late in the game."
UC opened up the scoring in the first half when Mark Konitsch (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence Senior) blasted a free kick on goal. His shot was punched away, but Nick Weightman (Lanark, Scotland/St. Aidans) was there for the half-volley put-back and a 1-0 Bearcats lead.
Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) posted the first-half shutout.
The Bearcats extended their lead in the 48th minute. Miguel Rosales (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) cleared an Ohio State attempt out to Konitsch, who found Weightman in the center of the field. Weightman played the ball down the left touchline to a streaking Konitsch who took the pass in full stride and slotted a shot hard and low for a 2-0 lead.
Rosales made a great save from a ball that was blasted on goal, punching it away with two hands. He made another save minutes later when he quickly reacted to a ball that was redirected on goal.
UC got a solid performance from the back line and once again earned the shutout, its eighth clean sheet in nine spring contests.
"Overall the spring season has been a success, not just based on the results but also on the progress we made as team," Dayes said.
