CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior Alberto Fernandez (Gijorn, Spain/La Corolla) has been named to the 2009 men's golf all-BIG EAST team, the conference announced Thursday (April 30). The team was voted on by the league's coaches following the 2009 BIG EAST Championships last week at Lake Jovita, Fla.

Fernandez finished 10th at the BIG EAST Championships with a one-under-par total of 215. He fired rounds of 71, 72, and 72, on the par-72 Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club South Course on April 19-21.

Fernandez led the Bearcats with a 73.8 average in 2008-09 with a low round of 67 at the Marshall Invitational, where he finished a season-best third.

Fernandez is the first Bearcat to earn all-BIG EAST honors since Geoff Newman finished third at the 2006 BIG EAST Championships.

Mike Van Sickle of Marquette was selected as the men's BIG EAST Player of the Year, while Louisville head coach Mark Crabtree earned BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors. The women's player of the year was Louisville's Cindy LaCrosse, while her coach, Kelly Rothberg, gave U of L a sweep of the conference coach of the year awards.

UC's men finished 11th at the BIG EAST Championships. The women finished in a third-place tie, led by sophomore Bambee Dela Paz (Caloocan City, Philippines/Miriam College), who placed eighth in the individual competition.
