CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati football team was named the Cincinnati Sports Story of the Year by the Cincinnati Sports Professional Network (CSPN) for the second-straight year during the organization's annual award banquet on April 28 at the Sharonville Convention Center.

Head coach Brian Kelly was the event's featured speaker. Associate head coach Kerry Coombs accepted the award on behalf of the 2008 team.

UC went 11-3 during last year's historic run to the 75th FedEx Orange Bowl, winning the school's first BIG EAST Championship in football, and earning a post-season ranking of No. 17 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.

Also honored were former UC track and field standouts Mary Wineberg and David Payne. Wineberg was a gold medalist in the 4x400-meter relay, while Payne won silver in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

CSPN serves as a networking organization for Greater Cincinnati sports professionals offering regularly scheduled programs and an annual awards ceremony for the sports business community. CSPN is a program fostered by the Greater Cincinnati Sports Corporation.

The Bearcats will open the 2009 season on Monday, Sept. 7, in a 4 p.m. BIG EAST Conference game at Rutgers. Season tickets are available now by calling 1-877-CATS-TIX or visiting CATSTIX.com.
