VILLANOVA, Pa. - Junior Jasmine Cotten, and sophomores Kaylon Eppinger and Chelsea Gerken all rank in the Top 8 of the heptathlon after Day 1 of the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Jumbo Elliot Stadium. During the opening day of competition in the heptathlon, athletes competed in the 100 hurdles, shot put, high jump, and the 200 meters. Cotten sits in second place with 3,210 points, Eppinger is in fourth with 3,000 points, and Gerken is in eighth with a score of 2,642.
Syracuse's Uhunoma Osazuwa is in first place after the first day with a score of 3,359.
In the 100 hurdles, Eppinger finished in second place with a time of 13.94, while Cotten was close behind with a third-place time of 14.21. Gerken's time of 15.52 was good enough for seventh place.
Gerken followed her seventh-place showing in the 100 hurdles with the top throw among all competitors in the shot put. Gerken scored 634 points in the shot put with a throw of 38' 1/4", while Cotten and Eppinger had puts of 35' 11-1/4" and 32' 4-1/4", respectively.
Cotten continued to stay atop the standings with a second-place jump of 5' 8" in the high jump, which netted her 891 points. Eppinger and Gerken put together leaps of 5' 2" and 4' 9-1/2", respectively.
Finally in the 200 meters, Cotten ran a time of 26.22, Eppinger collected a time of 26.19, and Gerken clocked in at 27.67 to round out Day 1 competition.
