Five University of Cincinnati swimmers were in off-season action this past weekend at the Charlotte UltraSwim, the fifth stop in the six-meet USA Swimming Grand Prix Series at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Jeremy Peter and Josh Schneider from the men's team competed while the women's squad was represented by Stephanie Conklin, Elinore de Jong, Lange Gilby, and Liz Hansson.
Several U.S. Olympians competed in the meet, including Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Christine Magnuson, Aaron Peirsol, and Cullen Jones. The meet was a long-course meet in 50-meter pool. NCAA events take place on a short-course pool that measures 25 yards.
Conklin qualified for the 'C' final in both breaststroke events. In the 100-meter breaststroke prelims, she clocked 1:14.40 to place 23rd in the 40-swimmer field. She swam 1:15.06 in the finals, placing 21st. In the 200 breaststroke, she was 23rd in the preliminaries with a 2:40.59 clocking, qualifying for the 'C' final, where she timed in at 2:42.32, placing 24th.
De Jong swam in three races, putting her best performance together in the 100 freestyle, where she placed 34th with a prelims time of 58.77. In the 50 freestyle, she was 49th with a time of 27.50. He final race was in the 100-meter butterfly, where she timed in at 1:04.52 in the prelims, earning a spot in 37th place.
Gilby qualified for the 'C' final in the 50 freestyle. She had a time of 26.95 in the prelims, placing 21st out of 75 swimmers. She clocked 26.74 in the final, placing no. 21 overall. She was 30th in the 100 freestyle, with a time of 58.63.
Hansson took part in four events, making the 'B' final in the 200-meter backstroke. She clocked 2:20.94 in the preliminaries, and placed 16th in the finals with a time of 2:21.72. In the 100 backstroke, she was 52nd with a 1:07.15 clocking. She was 45th in the 50 freestyle (27.47), and 54th in the 100 freestyle (59.58).
Peter swam in five races, tops for the UC participants, making the finals in two. In the 200-meter breaststroke, he qualified for the 'B' final after placing 16th out of 39 swimmers in the preliminaries with a time of 2:25.71. In the finals, he finished 13th with a better time of 2:24.32. He placed 21st in the 100-meter breaststroke, with a finals time of 58.21. In the prelims, Peter clocked 58.66 to place 19th out of 68 participants, making the 'C' final.
He also placed 32nd overall in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.51), and 60th in the 400-meter individual medley (5:06.18). He was disqualified during the backstroke leg of the 200 IM.
Schneider's top race was the 100-meter freestyle. He swam 50.99 in the preliminaries, placing 12th out of 90 swimmers and earning a spot in the 'B' final. He clocked 51.37 in his final heat to place 16th overall. He also was 43rd in the 100-meter butterfly (57.89), and was disqualified for a false start in the 50 freestyle.
