FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Jasmine Cotten (Fayetteville, W. Va./Fayetteville) completed Day 1 of the heptathlon at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and sits in a tie for ninth place with a score of 3,375.

In the first of four events on Day 1, Cotten clocked in at 14.14 in the 100 hurdles, placing her 17th among 27 competitors and scoring 959 points. The second event was the high jump and Cotten made up ground in one of her best events. Cotten tied for the highest clearance in the event with a leap of 5' 11-1/2", giving her 991 points.

In the final two events of the day, Cotten captured 612 points with a toss of 36' 11-1/2" in the shot put, before collecting 813 points in the 200 meters with a time of 25.82.

USC's Nia Ali sits in first place after Day 1 with a cumulative score of 3,663.

The final three events of the women's heptathlon -- the long jump, the javelin, and the 800 meters -- begin at 2:45 p.m. ET on Friday, June 12.
