ERIE, Pa. - Bill McDonald, a member of the University of Cincinnati football teams that played in the 1949 Glass Bowl and 1951 Sun Bowl will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on June 23.
McDonald, a 1952 graduate of UC, played under legendary Cincinnati head coach Sid Gillman and spent several years coaching high school football in his home state of Pennsylvania before moving into the collegiate coaching ranks. He spent time as an assistant coach at Indiana University (Pa.) before taking the head coaching job at Edinboro University in 1969.
While at Edinboro, McDonald led the Fighting Scots to a 54-36-7 record over 10 seasons and won Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference and Lambert Bowl titles in 1970. He was named the NAIA area and district coach of the year in 1970 and also earned Football Writers Association of New York Coach of the Year honors.
A U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War, McDonald was a founding board member of the Erie (Pa.) County YMCA and a member of Veterans of Former Wars posts in Edinboro and McKean, Pa.
McDonald, who passed away in March of 2002 at age 72, was inducted into the Beaver Valley Hall of Fame Association in 2000.
