NEW ORLEANS - One day after three University of Cincinnati women's track and field athletes earned United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team honors, three of UC's men's track and field athletes, throwers Chad Hanson (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) and Ian Jarman (Felicity, Ohio/Felicity-Franklin), and distance specialist Randy King (North Bend, Ohio/St. Xavier), were among 327 student-athletes representing 107 Division I institutions that made up the men's 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic team.
Hanson qualified for the NCAA Mid-East Regional in the hammer throw and registered Top 10 finishes in eight of nine meets. Hanson's top throw of the season came at the All-Ohio Championships, where he finished in fifth place with a mark of 190' 5". After that mark placed him in the NCAA Mid-East Regional, Hanson finished 29th at the Regional with a toss of 173' 2". Hanson graduated in June with a degree in industrial relations.
Jarman was UC's most consistent thrower in the hammer throw this season throwing over 190' in six of nine meets. Jarman's top throw of the season was 196' at the Cardinal Twilight, a tune-up for the NCAA Mid-East Regional, before finishing 14th at the Regional with a throw of 191' 1". Jarman, a senior, finished his career with Cincinnati's record in the hammer throw after registering a mark of 203' in 2008. Jarman was a double major in biology and chemistry and graduated in June with a 3.314 GPA.
King finished his career on a high note, qualifying for the NCAA Mid-East Regional in the 3,000 steeplechase at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 9:12.91. At the Regional, King crossed the line in 28th place with a time of 9:31.10. Owning a 3.962 GPA in electrical engineering, King also was a 2009 CoSIDA Academic All-District and CoSIDA Academic Third-Team All-America selection.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
