CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics has solidified its golf programs with the naming of Janet Carl, a Class A Member of the LPGA, as its Director of Golf and Head Women's Golf Coach, and Doug Martin as its Head Men's Golf Coach.
"Janet Carl is an accomplished professional, teacher, and coach," Director of Athletics Mike Thomas said. "During her time at UC, her teams have won tournaments, excelled in the classroom, and served as leaders in our community. We are pleased to have Janet as our Director of Golf at the University of Cincinnati."
Carl has led the Bearcats golf program since 2004 after spending one season as an assistant coach. The Vice President of the Mid-West Section of the LPGA, she is currently serving as Vice President of the BIG EAST Golf Coaches Association. Prior to her appointment at UC, Carl served as golf coach at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Ky., from 1999-2001, winning Cincinnati Enquirer Coach of the Year honors all three years and Cincinnati Post Coach of the Year twice. She came to the Cincinnati area in 1993 and served in various positions within the golf community prior to taking the post at Notre Dame Academy.
A 1982 graduate of the University of Alabama served as assistant director of the LPGA Junior Girls Golf Clubs in 1994 before being named executive director. She is a Class A member of LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals. Carl was also an instructor in Mexico, Georgia, Vermont and Florida.
Carl has been honored as the 2006 LPGA National Coach of the Year and earned the LPGA Founder's Award for 2008, based on community service.
Martin, in his third season at UC, will be elevated to men's head coach.
"Doug has done some great things since joining UC three years ago," Thomas stated. "His background includes success at the junior, amateur, collegiate, and professional levels, and he brings a wealth of teaching experience to our men's program."
Martin tutored Alberto Fernandez (Gijorn, Spain/La Corolla) to all-BIG EAST honors in 2009, just the second Bearcat to earn all-BIG EAST honors.
Martin has found success on all levels of golf, beginning with his days as a junior golfer in the mid-1980's. During that time, Martin was a two-time AJGA All-American and was ranked No. 1 in the nation in 1984. He moved on to more success on the amateur level, ascending to the No. 1 national ranking in 1989. From there, Martin moved on to a successful collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma. While at OU, Martin won five individual titles and was a three-time All-American. Martin enjoyed a memorable moment in 1989 when he finished second in the NCAA Championship to current PGA star Phil Mickelson.
Following college, Martin played for eight years on the PGA Tour, and earned a pair of professional victories. In 1995, Martin lost a five-hole playoff to Vijah Singh. Since retiring from the tour in 1999, Martin has been involved in golf instruction and course set-up. He is also manager and part-owner of The Golf Ranch in Burlington, Ky.
