CINCINNATI - Former professional goalkeeper Denny McCaughey has been named a volunteer assistant for the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team, head coach Hylton Dayes announced Friday (Aug. 7).

McCaughey, who played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League, the National Professional Soccer League, the A-League and spent three seasons in Major League Soccer before retiring in 2000, joins the Bearcats staff and will handle the goalkeeper training duties.

"We're very fortunate to have Denny join our coaching staff," said Dayes. "He has a wealth of experience and a tremendous background in the game. We look forward to working with him and he will do a great job of training and developing our goalkeepers as we continue to work toward our goal of a BIG EAST Championship."

McCaughey brings 10 years of coaching experience to the Bearcats staff, having served as goalkeepers coach at the University of Tampa for three seasons, as well as spending three seasons as the Goalkeeper Director for the Nike Soccer Academy. He also spent time as goalkeeper coach for the Florida state Olympic Development Program. Most recently, McCaughey served as the goalkeeper coach for the Cincinnati Kings Premier Development League squad.

A 1992 graduate of West Florida, McCaughey earned a bachelor's degree in sport management while playing soccer and baseball. A three-year starter in goal for the Argonauts, he earned three all-conference honors and was twice named a second-team all-American.

Following graduation from West Florida, McCaughey attended Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp as a placekicker. He spent two seasons (1993-94) in the Arena Football League, kicking for the Charlotte Rays and Tampa Bay Storm.

McCaughey earned his master's degree in business administration from Tampa in 1998.
