CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior Mardy Gilyard (Bunnell, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast) was named to the initial watch lists for the 2009 Biletnikoff Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year awards, the respective awards committees announced.
The Biletnikoff Award is presented to the nation's top wide receiver while the Walter Camp Player of the Year honor, the fourth-oldest individual college football award, goes to the nation's most outstanding player.
Gilyard had a breakout year in 2008, catching 81 passes for a school-record 1,276 yards along with a team-high 11 touchdowns. He had seven 100-yard receiving games a year ago and had seven catches for a career-best 158 yards in the 2009 FedEx Orange Bowl.
He was named the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Year after returning 36 kicks for a school-record 994 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was also a first-team all-BIG EAST honoree at both wide receiver and kick returner.
The Walter Camp Football Foundation presents the player of the year honor annually, while the Biletnikoff award is presented each year by The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.
The Bearcats will open the 2009 season on Monday, Sept. 7, in a 4 p.m. BIG EAST Conference game at Rutgers. Season tickets are available now by calling 1-877-CATS-TIX or visiting CATSTIX.com.
