CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball program held a free clinic for over 220 area youth on Saturday (Aug. 15) in Fifth Third Arena.

The clinic was split into two sessions, a morning session for children in fifth and sixth grade, and an afternoon session aimed at seventh and eighth grade girls.

First-year head coach Jamelle Elliott was pleased with the turnout.

"It is always great to give back to the community," said Elliott. "There is a mutual benefit to having our players and coaches working with young ladies in the Cincinnati area that are interested in basketball. They learn from us, we learn from them, and everyone has fun!"

The youngsters went through drills and practices led by UC players and members of the coaching staff before moving on to the competition. Hotly contested shooting games, knockout and full-court scrimmages dotted the Fifth Third Arena floor as the clinic wound down.

Elliott spoke to the group, as did former Mount Notre Dame and UConn standout Mel Thomas. Awards were given for the team shooting champion, the individual knockout champ, and a special award went to the first person to sign up for the clinic: a four-pack of tickets to a UC women's game.

Following the awards, the players and coaches signed autographs for the attendees.
