BERLIN - After advancing to the finals of the 110m hurdles with the second-best time in his semifinal heat at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics earlier today, former University of Cincinnati track and field athlete David Payne earned a bronze medal in the event with a time of 13.15.
The bronze medal is Payne's second at the IAAF World Championships. The Cincinnati native took home the bronze in the 110 hurdles at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan.
Payne, who captured a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, was one of three athletes involved in a photo finish to determine the World Champion. After deliberation, it was determined that Barbados' Ryan Brathwaite took home the gold medal by one one-hundredth of a second over USA's Terrence Trammell and Payne.
In the semifinals, Payne clocked in at 13.24 to finish second in Heat 2 behind Brathwaite. However, Payne's semifinal mark matched Trammell for the second-best time amongst all competitors in the semifinals, placing Payne in Lane 3 for the finals.
