CINCINNATI - In its first action of the 2009 season, the University of Cincinnati volleyball team played its annual Alumni Match and defeated the Alumni Team 25-13, 25-17, 25-19, 25-9, 15-11.
UC was led by junior outside hitter Stephanie Niemer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) and sophomore outside hitter Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy), who put down 21 kills and 16 kills, respectively. Harpenau also added six service aces.
All 11 players saw action, including all five freshmen. Freshman middle hitter Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) added eight kills and a team-best four blocks, while fellow freshman middle hitter Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich./Lutheran Westland) contributed six kills and three blocks.
The Alumni Team consisted of Jenny Custer, Julie DuPont, Jessica Elley, Trish Ladusaw, Laura Lauder, Jessie Nevitt, Leslie Newell, Lindsey Peterson, Maria Pongonis, Becky Tenkman, and Beth Brickler.
Cincinnati begins its 2009 season on Friday, Aug. 28 at the Utah Classic versus the University of California-Riverside in Salt Lake City. Following the completion of the Utah Classic, UC hosts the Bearcats Invitational Sept. 4-5 at Fifth Third Arena.
