With the 2009 University of Cincinnati volleyball season just days away, GoBEARCATS.com sat down with 2008 second-team all-BIG EAST performer Annie Fesl to talk about UC volleyball.

Q: In between your freshman and sophomore season, you missed the spring season with an injury. With this spring being your first, in what areas did you feel like you improved the most?

A: During this spring season I believe I improved my consistency as a setter. This made it easier to have good connections with all my hitters and it kept the offense running smoothly. I also believe I had more time to focus on my blocking and defense. I made some improvements in both these areas.

Q: In your two years, what is the best road trip you have been on and why?

A: Last year we traveled to Syracuse, N.Y. Although it does not seem like a very exciting place to be, we played in the most exciting match of our lives. We split 2-2 with the Orange leading us into the fifth set. We were down the entire set. We were down 8-1 at one point and they even held match point at 14-11. However, we rallied back and never gave in. We ended up coming back and winning 16-14. This had to have been the best match I have ever played in. After the match we sang and celebrated on the bus on our way to eat, where (assistant coach) Myanna took on a 12-scoop ice cream challenge and conquered. This was a road trip I will never forget!

Q: What made you eventually decide on Cincinnati?

A: Cincinnati was just the right fit for me. It was far enough away from home that I could start fresh and the volleyball program was good and in a very strong conference. Reed (Sunahara) was exactly what I was looking for in a coach and they needed a setter my year!

Q: Do you have a pre-match ritual and if so, what is it?

A: Before a game I listen to my iPod, which always pumps me up. When I get ready I always start with my right sock and go from there alternating legs with socks, knee pads, and shoes. Then we sing and dance in the locker room together.

Q: As a player, who has influenced you the most on the court?

A: My sister had the biggest influence on me on the court. I started playing with her when I was in seventh grade. Then I played on the same team as her in high school and we were in the gym together for high school and club. She always played with such enthusiasm and high intensity. Her drive and desire to win was noticeable every time she stepped on the court. She loves to play volleyball and gives 110 percent every day.

Q: The team lost a three-time all-American in Jessie Nevitt and an all-conference performer in Jessica Elley. However, you return a strong nucleus of players along with five talented newcomers. What does the addition of the newcomers add to this team?

A: The newcomers are all very quick and athletic. They bring a lot of speed and agility to this team. We will be able to run a fast offense and we should be a big block. After our preseason training, we should be ready to compete and win in the BIG EAST.

Cincinnati begins its 2009 season on Friday, August 28 at the Utah Classic versus UC-Riverside in Salt Lake City, Utah. Following the completion of the Utah Classic, Cincinnati hosts the Bearcat Invitational Sept. 4-5 at Fifth Third Arena.
