CINCINNATI - The UC Bearcat has been named one of the 12 members of the 2009 Capital One All-America Mascot Team and will be competing for the coveted title of "Capital One National Mascot of the Year." The Bearcat is the eighth mascot to be announced by the selection committee, joining Testudo (Maryland), Jack Rabbit (South Dakota State), Butch T. Cougar (Washington State), Mike the Tiger (LSU), SuperFrog (TCU), Bill the Goat (Navy), and Sabastian the Ibis (Miami, Fla.).
After being told of his selection to the All-America Mascot Team, the UC Bearcat was left "speechless." But after gathering himself, he raced down to the basement of the Richard E. Lindner Center and immediately began his extensive workout regimen with UC's world-renowned strength and conditioning staff. Fans can follow the Bearcat throughout his trek to being named the Capital One Mascot of the Year all season long with video updates on www.GoBEARCATS.com, or his Twitter (www.twitter.com/the_uc_bearcat) and Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/the UC Bearcat). Fans can go there now to see his first workout.
Starting August 31 and going through December, fans can begin voting for the Bearcat online for the National Mascot of the Year at www.capitalonebowl.com. The winner of Mascot of the Year will be crowned on Jan. 1, 2010 at the Capital One Bowl.
Bearcat was named a Capital One All-America Mascot based on his highlight video made earlier this year. He was selected for his interaction with fans, originality, creativity, and professionalism.
"As with all of our student-athletes I am very proud of what BEARCAT has accomplished during his distinguished UC career to date," said Director of Athletics Mike Thomas. "BEARCAT is the consummate team-first competitor and I know that I join all of UC Nation in pledging my enthusiastic support for his 2009 campaign. UC Athletics is proud to be a part of the Capital One All-America Mascot contest and in the end, I know that BEARCAT will prove to be America's finest college mascot."
UC fans are encouraged to bookmark www.capitalonebowl.com and the Bearcat's Twitter and Facebook pages so they can vote early and vote often. Fans can vote multiple times a day during the contest, and Capital One does not collect names, addresses, or email addresses from anyone who casts a vote.
