PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Cincinnati redshirt freshman defender Kit North (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) was named BIG EAST Men's Soccer Freshman of the Week, the league office announced today (Sept. 7). Junior forward Branden Stelmak (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) earned a spot on the league honor roll.
North scored the Bearcats' first goal of the season in his first career appearance, a header off a corner kick in the eighth minute at No. 18 Dayton. North, a central defender, helped UC to a 3-0 start for the first time since the 1998 season and guided the Bearcats defense to a pair of shutouts.
Stelmak scored three goals in three matches last week, including a pair of tallies at No. 18 Dayton. He scored game-winners at Dayton and against Canisius and added an assist in a 2-0 win against Wright State. The Bearcats' leading scorer in 2008 with four goals and nine points, Stelmak already has three goals and seven points thus far in 2009.
After three matches in five days to start the season, UC will now take a five day break before hosting the inaugural adidas Bearcat Classic on Sept. 11 and Sept. 13. The Bearcats will take on Western Illinois on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before playing host to No. 3 Akron on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
