CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2009 campaign with second-place finishes at the Queen City Invitational Saturday afternoon at Mt. Airy Forest. The women's team finished with 48 points, which tied Xavier for first, but Xavier won the tiebreaker to win the event. The men's team had 56 points, finishing 19 points behind Xavier.

Sophomore Eric Finan and senior Jocelyn McCauley both led the Bearcats with wins in the men's and women's races, respectively, with times of 15:16 and 18:20.

Alongside McCauley, who competed in her first race as a Bearcat, senior Tamara Masters and junior Lilian Jelimo completed a 1-2-3 UC finish in the women's race with times of 18:38 and 18:39, respectively. Juniors Michele McKenney and Katie Lewnard rounded out the scoring finishing in 20th and 24th place.

On the men's side, junior Ricky Lupp followed up Finan's first-place showing with a fifth-place time of 15:42. Junior David Barry added a 10th-place time of 15:58, before freshmen Chase Beckmann and Oliver Book completed the scoring. In their first collegiate races, Beckmann and Book finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, with marks of 16:19 and 16:20.

The Bearcats next compete at the Iona College Meet of Champions on Sept. 19, in New York, N.Y.
