RICHMOND, Ky. - Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) scored two goals and had an assist leading the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory in nonconference action at Eastern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. Morrissey's game-winning goal came with three seconds left on the scoreboard, improving UC's record to 4-3-0 on the year.
"We didn't play particularly great soccer today," said head coach Michelle Salmon. "Eastern Kentucky had a great game plan and they are well coached. They came out with a lot of heart and effort but at the end of the day Julie Morrissey came up in a big way and provided us the offense we needed to win. I thought Erin MacDonald's ability to never give up on a play, even in the final 15 seconds of a game, is a true testament of her drive to be successful. I also thought that Erin Kaufman (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) did an outstanding job off the bench for us. She provided a much needed spark, kept possession of the ball, and won balls in critical moments," said Salmon.
Cincinnati controlled the first half, holding a 2-0 advantage at intermission. Kendall Loggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) scored the first goal off a corner kick by Melissa Bigg (Limehouse, Ont./Acton) and a pass from Morrissey at the 16:08 mark. In the 28th minute, Morrissey headed in a corner kick from Bigg. The Bearcats outshot the Colonels, 5-4, in the first stanza and held Eastern Kentucky (3-4-0) scoreless.
In the second half EKU took seven shots to UC's three and the Colonels scored in the 49th and 72nd minute to tie the game at two. At the 89:57 point of the game Morrissey took a feed from Erin MacDonald (St. Catharine's, Ontario/West Park Secondary) and drilled the game-winner from 20-yards out.
EKU outshot UC, 11-8, for the game and held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks. Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) earned her third victory in goal this season and had three saves.
Cincinnati plays its first BIG EAST Conference match of 2009 next, taking on Louisville in a 7:30 p.m. match at Gettler Stadium on Friday, Sept. 18. The match will take place after UC's men's soccer team takes on Pittsburgh in BIG EAST action at 5 p.m.
