Volleyball Receives Votes in AVCA PollVolleyball Receives Votes in AVCA Poll

Sept. 14, 2009

After a tough week of competition, which featured a win over No. 16 Saint Louis, the University of Cincinnati volleyball team received votes in the Sept. 14 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, the organization announced today. Cincinnati owns an overall record of 6-4, with three of its four losses coming to ranked opponents (No. 17 Utah, No. 17 Kentucky, and No. 14 Illinois).

Penn State remains at No. 1 in the poll for the third consecutive week, while Texas, Washington, Hawai’i, and Florida round out the Top 5. Three of Cincinnati’s opponents from last week – Illinois, Kentucky, and Saint Louis – are ranked No. 14, No. 16, and No. 22, respectively.

After a tough five-set loss at No. 17 Kentucky on Tuesday, Sept. 8, UC traveled to Champaign, Ill., to play in the Illinois State Farm Classic. Following a Friday night loss to No. 14 Illinois (3-0), the Bearcats rebounded with wins over No. 16 Saint Louis (3-0) and Illinois State (3-0) to finish the week with a 2-2 record.

The win over No. 16 Saint Louis was Cincinnati’s first win over a ranked opponent since Oct. 10, 2003, when the Bearcats defeated No. 17 Louisville, 3-0. The triumph over the Billikens also marked the highest-ranked opponent Cincinnati has defeated in school history.

The Red and Black return home for a mid-week tilt against Western Kentucky on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m., before heading back on the road to compete at the Northwestern Tournament Sept. 18-19. At the Northwestern Tournament, UC takes on Long Island at 6 p.m. EDT on Friday, Sept. 18, before taking on Akron and Northwestern at 11:30 a.m. EDT and 8 p.m. EDT, respectively, on Saturday, Sept. 19.
