CINCINNATI - Mark Konitsch (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence Senior) scored his second goal of the season to lead the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team to a 1-0 win against Pittsburgh in the BIG EAST opener for both squads on Friday (Sept. 18) at Gettler Stadium.

Konitsch's goal came in the 14th minute after a build-up from Matt Bahner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Branden Stelmak (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights). Bahner recorded his first point of the season with the assist.

"We are pleased with the win," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "We made it difficult because we didn't finish our chances we created. We had a lot of quality chances and just couldn't finish. When you only have a 1-0 lead it keeps the other team in the game and at the end we had to manage the game in order to win."

The Bearcats (5-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) outshot the Panthers (1-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) by a 24-3 count and held an 8-0 edge on corner kicks.

Redshirt sophomore Miguel Rosales (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) earned his third shutout of the season in goal.

Cincinnati welcomes West Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 20, looking for a 2-0 start to conference play. The Bearcats and Mountaineers kick off at 1 p.m. in Gettler Stadium.
