MUNCIE, Ind. - Freshman Andrew Desmarais (Union, Ky./Ryle) finished tied for fourth in his first collegiate event, helping the University of Cincinnati men's golf team to a third-place finish at the season-opening Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Delaware Country Club on Tuesday (Sept. 22).
The Bearcats posted a three-round total of 289-281-291=861, five shots behind second-place Ball State, the tournament host. Bowling Green won the team title with a 10-over 276-280-294=850.
Desmarais fired rounds of 70-71-72=213 to finish three over par, just four shots back of Bowling Green's Drew Preston, who captured the individual title with rounds of 65-67-77=209.
Junior Joe Kastelic (Newton, N.C./Fred T. Foard) finished in a tie for eighth after rounds of 73-71-71=215. Another true freshman, David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East), also tied for eighth after shooting 71-70-74=215.
Also seeing their first collegiate action, freshmen Zach Bates (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and Matt Ledom (Leawood, Kan./Rockhurst Jesuit Prep) finished T-31 and T-57, respectively. Bates fired rounds of 75-69-79=223 and Ledom finished 77-79-74=230.
The Bearcats are back in action on Sept. 28-29 at the Cleveland State Invitational.
