LOUISVILLE - The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team lost, 4-0, to South Carolina in the Courtyard by Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic at Cardinal Park, hosted by the University of Louisville. The Gamecocks are ranked No. 2 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) South region and improved to 4-0 with the win.
"We had two lapses in the 79th and 81st minute that really cost us," said head coach Michelle Salmon. "When you play a really good team like South Carolina you have to expect them to capitalize on their chances. We had three or four good chances and didn't capitalize, like they did. All we can do is learn from this game and get better."
The Gamecocks scored in the 27th minute after Blakely Mattern found the back of the net with an assist from Ellen Fahey and Sam Diaz-Matosas. A Cincinnati foul set up a goal for Diaz-Matosas off an assist from Kayla Grimsley in the 60th minute. In the 79th minute, the Gamecocks' Megan Fligg added a third goal, assisted by Kim Miller. Moments later Maria Petroni entered the game and took a feed from Miller, giving South Carolina a 4-0 advantage in the 81st minute.
South Carolina outshot UC, 22-10, and held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks. Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) recorded 11 saves in goal for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati (2-3-0) will play its home season opener next, on Thursday, Sept. 10, when they take on crosstown rival Xavier at Gettler Stadium in a 7 p.m. match.
