DELAWARE, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams both finished in fourth place at the All-Ohio Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. Sophomore Eric Finan continued his successful season with a second-place finish in the men's race, finishing only behind Ohio State's two-time track and field all-American, Jeff See.
The course at the Methodist Theological School/Delaware Golf Club was muddy due to early morning rain, but it did not stop Finan from running a great race. Finan kept pace with the pack through the first mile before opening up a seven-second lead at the two-mile mark. Finan held his lead at the three-mile mark but slipped into third place four miles into the race. Down the stretch, Finan passed Ohio State's Adam Green to finish the 8K race in second place with a time of 26:19.3.
The junior tandem of David Barry and Ricky Lupp followed Finan with 12th- and 20th-place finishes, respectively. UC freshmen Chase Beckmann and Oliver Book were not too far behind as Beckmann's time of 27:39.7 placed him 34th, before Book closed the UC scoring placing 46th. UC scored 116 points to place fourth out of 38 schools.
On the women's side, senior Lilian Jelimo finished sixth overall to lead UC, marking the third consecutive year that she has finished in the Top 6 at the event. Jelimo was shadowed by senior Jocelyn McCauley, who finished seventh overall and nine seconds behind Jelimo with a time of 18:46.8. Junior Tamara Masters was not too far behind with a 15th-place time of 19:10.6, keeping UC within striking distance of the leaders. Junior Michele McKenney and Courtney Staruch completed the scoring for UC as Cincinnati finished fourth out of 42 squads with 169 points.
UC has one more tune-up before heading to the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31, in Kenosha, Wis., when it travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-Nationals race on Saturday, Oct. 17.
