WASHINGTON, D.C. - Katie Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) scored her first career goal to give the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team the first point of the match but the Bearcats lost, 3-2, against Georgetown at North Kehoe Field on Sunday afternoon.
Johnson scored in the 34th minute, connecting on a header from Kendall Loggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and hitting the bottom right side of the goal. Cincinnati (7-7-1, 2-4-1 BIG EAST) held the 1-0 advantage for six minutes before Georgetown (10-3-2, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) tied the match with a Samantha Baker header off a corner kick by Caitlin Durkee.
The Hoyas rattled off two more goals in the second half before Melissa Bigg (Limehouse, Ont./Acton) scored an acrobatic goal from Brooke Eberly (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) in the 74th minute.
"I thought we brought a tremendous amount of energy to the game today," said head coach Michelle Salmon. "We came out, applied pressure and stuck to our game plan. We had trouble on set pieces that Georgetown was able to score on but we can clean that up this week."
UC took its most shots in a game since Sept. 20 against Akron, taking 11 shots to Georgetown's 15. Andrea Kaminski (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) had three saves in goal for Cincinnati and the Hoyas held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
"I like how we played and how we battled today," said Salmon. "The players on the field really did an outstanding job. I'm excited to return to Gettler Stadium and get our home crowd involved and behind us during our final stretch to make the BIG EAST Tournament."
The Bearcats play their final four regular season games at home, starting on Friday, Oct. 16 with a BIG EAST match against Marquette at 7 p.m.
