CINCINNATI- The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team will be competing in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Ohio Valley Championships, Oct. 22-26, head coach Angela Wilson announced today. The four-day tournament will be hosted by the Western Tennis and Fitness Club in Western Hills. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which run from Nov. 5-8, hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

The Bearcats are competing in the tournament for the first time in school history. Last season, second-year head coach Angela Wilson guided Cincinnati to a 16-9 record. The 16 wins were fourth most in school history for a single season. However, tournaments like this are good tests for a young team trying to compete in the BIG EAST Conference.

"This is a great event and is going to be tennis at its highest level, said Wilson." "It's great for the city and even better for the university as far as getting exposure, and from a team standpoint it gives our girls a chance to compete against top tier talent from across the region."

In addition to the Bearcats, schools from various conferences, such as the Big Ten, SEC and Atlantic 10, will be participants in the tournament. In the Ohio Valley Region alone, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Louisville and Xavier complete nearly half the field. The level of competition is something that intrigues coach Wilson.

"Having traditional powers such as Kentucky and Tennessee playing in this tournament only helps our girls. It's great for creating awareness and building the program, and inevitably, it helps us in the future build our schedule."

The 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, and top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.

Wilson added, "Cincinnati is a great tennis town, and in this tournament you are going to see great college tennis being played by some of the greatest players in the country. Some of the girls you will be watching will be playing professionally when their college careers end."

As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit presented by the USTA, and the Campbell/ITA Rankings for men's and women's tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership, and sportsmanship. The official ITA website is www.itatennis.com.

Western Tennis & Fitness Club is the indoor home playing site of the UC women's tennis team. Admission is free and play will begin each day at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Singles finals are set to begin on Monday morning.
