PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Rutgers at Yurcak Field on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 18). Rutgers (6-7-0, 4-4-0 BIG EAST) got three important points in the chase for a berth in the BIG EAST Championship next month. UC dropped to 8-7-0 overall and 3-5-0 in BIG EAST play.
The first half was scoreless when Rutgers held a 13-4 edge in shots. UC goalkeeper Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made four saves in the stanza to keep the sheet clean and head into intermission at 0-0.
Rutgers got on the board just four minutes into the second half when Robbie McLarney scored his first of the season off a rebound and scramble outside the box.
The Bearcats pushed forward looking for the equalizer, but conceded a second goal in the 73rd minute and the final tally in the 82nd minute, both by Yannick Salmon - his fifth and sixth goals of the campaign.
"Even after giving up the first goal, we were still in the game and created some chances," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "The second Rutgers goal swung the momentum their way. It is difficult to get a result on the road in the BIG EAST and today was an example of that."
Williams made six saves on the day for the Bearcats.
The match was scheduled to be played on Saturday, Oct. 17, but inclement weather in the New Jersey area forced a change in travel plans for UC and moved the start to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
"With three matches left, we still have a chance to make the BIG EAST Championship," Dayes continued. "Our guys will bounce back next Saturday against St. John's."
The Bearcats return to Gettler Stadium for the 2009 home finale against St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
