CINCINNATI- The University of Cincinnati tennis team competed in the Wilson/ITA Ohio Valley Championships this past weekend. The tournament, hosted by Cincinnati, was played at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club in Western Hills. Caitlin Whoriskey from the University of Tennessee won the singles draw, while Erica Robertson and Heather Steinbauer from Vanderbilt won the doubles flight.

The Bearcats entered four players - Ksenia Slynko, Elise Woulfe, Lindsey Lonergan, and Safiyya Ismail - in the singles draw, with Caitlyn O'Gara and Slynko participating on the doubles team.

Slynko advanced to the round of 32 by winning her first round match, 6-1, 6-0. She was then matched up against the No. 5, Megan Broderick of Kentucky, in the following round where she was defeated, 6-2, 6-3. Broderick went on to lose to eventual champion Whoriskey in the quarterfinals.

Lindsey Lonergan also advanced to the round of 32 with a three-set victory in her first match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The junior was then defeated in the following round by Memphis' Courtney Collins, 6-2, 6-3.

Freshman Elise Woulfe and sophomore Safiyya Ismail lost their first round matches, 6-3, 6-1, and 7-6 (7), 6-2, respectively.

Matched up against the doubles team representing Kentucky, Cincinnati's O'Gara and Slynko were defeated, 8-4, failing to advance to the round of 32.

In the consolation draw, sophomore Jessica Wise was victorious, winning in two sets, 6-3, 7-5. Sophomore Anna Nelke, Woulfe, and O'Gara were defeated in their respective draws. Nelke fell 6-0, 6-0, while O'Gara was forced to retire due to injury.

Competition resumes for the tennis team on Jan. 23, when they host Bowling Green. Those matches will be played at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club.
