SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team finished seventh at the Match Play on Sunday (Nov. 1) at Pine Needles Golf Club.

The event, hosted by BIG EAST Conference foe DePaul, paired the conference schools in match play competition. The teams were seeded by Golfstat ranking, with UC coming in ranked as the No. 4 program in the BIG EAST.

UC received a bye through the first round of competition and faced Connecticut in the second round. Joe Kastelic (Newton, N.C./Fred T. Foard) and UConn's Jeb Buchanan halved their round, but the Huskies took the 2-5 spots to earn a 5-1 win.

The Bearcats then squared off against Georgetown, falling 5.5-0.5. Nick Proud (Middletown, Ohio/Lakota East) earned the half point for UC, halving his round against GU's Trevor Matese.

Cincinnati then defeated Rutgers, 4.0-2.0, in the final round's seventh-place match. Kastelic, David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East), and Zack Bates (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) won their matchups. Andrew Desmarais (Union, Ky./Ryle) and Proud earned half points each.

Second-seeded Louisville won the match play title, 3.5-2.5, over Notre Dame, the top seed. Connecticut was third, defeating DePaul, 4.0-2.0.

This marks the final fall event for the Bearcats. UC will open the spring schedule on March 1, 2010, at the Tennessee-Martin Invitational.
