KENT, Ohio - In the opening day of the Golden Flash Gala, the University of Cincinnati women's indoor track and field team's first meet of the season, senior Jasmine Cotten picked up right where she left off last season with a NCAA Provisional qualifying mark in the pentathlon. Cotten finished with 4,056, just 19 points shy of the NCAA Automatic qualifying mark.
In the pentathlon, Cotten won the 60-meter hurdles, the high jump, and the long jump en route to her 469-point victory. Junior Boudine Bouma also put in a good performance with a fifth-place showing in the pentathlon with a score of 3,194 points.
UC continued to prosper in the field events as the sophomore duo of Michelle Eby and Mackenzie Fields led the Bearcats in the pole vault with a second- and third-place showing, respectively, as both cleared 12' 3.5".
In her first performance of her career, freshman Shanay Portis was the top finisher for the Bearcats in the long jump. Portis' mark of 17' 4" was good enough to finish in eighth place, which was the second-best mark among competing freshmen.
Senior Tamara Masters closed out the first day of competition with a fifth-place showing in the 5,000 meters clocking in at 17:50.04.
UC continues the Golden Flashes Gala on Saturday, Dec. 12, with events beginning at 10 a.m.
