LEXINGTON, Ky. - On the opening day of the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet hosted by the University of Kentucky, the University of Cincinnati men's and women's indoor track and field teams got off to great starts in the two-day event highlighted by wins from sophomore Mackenzie Fields in the women's pole vault and junior Mike Foley in the men's high jump.
Fields took top honors in the pole vault with a personal record clearance of 13' 1-1/2". The mark cemented Fields as the second women's pole vaulter in school history to clear 13-feet in an indoor event, joining Brittany Klima who owns the school record at 13' 3-1/2", while Fields' leap also reached NCAA Provisional qualifying standards.
In addition to Fields, sophomore Michelle Eby tied for third (11' 7-3/4"), seniors Kayla Dunn and Stefanie Ponte tied for sixth, and freshman Kate Heinrichs placed 13th in the pole vault. Dunn and Ponte also cleared 11' 7-3/4", which was a PR for Ponte, while Heinrichs mark of 11' 1-3/4" was a BIG EAST qualifying mark.
In the men's high jump, Foley, senior Brandon Fitch, and senior Ryan Beltz all finished in the Top 5. Foley and Fitch both cleared 6' 8-1/4", for first- and second-place showings, giving Foley a new PR in the event. Beltz recorded a mark of 6' 4-1/4" landing him in fifth.
In other events, freshman Anastasia Tarpeh and sophomore Zach Schmidt both established new PR's in the triple jump with leaps of 34' 5" and 43' 1-1/4", respectively, while sophomore Troy Cooper and sophomore Deanna Rippy were UC's top finishers in the men's and women's weight throw.
The Bearcats resume action at the 2010 Rod McCravy Memorial Meet on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 10:30 a.m.
