NEW ORLEANS - After back-to-back impressive performances at the Gladstein Invitational and the Rod McCravy Invitational, the University of Cincinnati Women's Indoor Track and Field team was ranked seventh in the Great Lakes Region in the latest regional rankings, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today.
The USTFCCCA recently released the regional team index, which is best used to find a team's all-around strength, as it takes many athletes in many events to yield a high score. The national-team rankings are taken in context with national championship where it takes a few very elite athletes to score well.
Cincinnati is just one of two programs in the State of Ohio to be ranked regionally along with Ohio State, who is ranked third in the Great Lakes Region.
The Bearcats have had four NCAA Provisional qualifying marks this season, three of which have come from senior Jasmine Cotten (high jump, long jump, pentathlon). The other provisional mark came last weekend at the Rod McCravy Invitational by sophomore pole vaulter Mackenzie Fields, who cleared 13' 1-1/2" to win the event.
Cincinnati heads off to New York City, this weekend to compete in the New Balance Invitational Feb. 5-6, at the Armory Track. The competition consists of a host of nationally-ranked teams and the Armory Track is the site of the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 20-21.
