CINCINNATI - The UC Department of Athletics Marketing is pleased to announce festivities surrounding the Women's Basketball game on Tuesday, February 9 in Fifth Third Arena. Fans are encouraged to wear their Bearcat red and come support the Bearcats as they battle the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 7:00 pm. The game has been designated as Go RED for Heart Night as part of the Go RED for women campaign.

Festivities for the Go RED for women campaign begins this Friday, February 5 when the UC Health University Hospital and the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine will host an event at University Hospital to celebrate National Wear Red Day. This event is being held as part of the Go RED for Women campaign to raise awareness about the nation's No. 1 killer: heart disease.

Beginning at noon, a variety of activities will be held in the lobby of UC Health University Hospital, 234 Goodman St., and will move to the cafeteria of the CARE/Crawley building, located on Eden Ave., at 12:30 p.m. The UC Athletics Marketing department will be on hand for a BEARCAT FRIDAY. All employess wearing Bearcat gear will have an opportunity to win Bearcat merchandise and prizes. Other activities include:

  • Free blood pressure checks in the University Hospital lobby, conducted by University Hospital medical staff.
  • An opportunity to meet and get your photo taken with the UC Bearcat mascot. The UC Bearcat recently won the Capital One National Mascot of the Year award.
  • A Go RED Group Photo at 12:15 p.m. for all students, faculty and staff who wear red.
  • A brown bag luncheon and talk about women and heart disease at 12:30 p.m. in the CARE/Crawley cafeteria featuring Stephanie Dunlap, MD, DO, a UC Health cardiologist.
  • Registration tables for the American Heart Association's Mini-Marathon and Heart Walk, scheduled for March 28.
  • Door prizes and heart-healthy treats.

"We are pleased to be holding an event to raise awareness about a disease as far reaching and serious as heart disease," says Lee Ann Liska, executive director and senior vice president of University Hospital and this year's event chair of the American Heart Association's Heart Mini-Marathon here in Cincinnati. "UC Health cardiologists have a mission to provide quality, individualized care to patients, but it starts with knowing your risks and the signs of heart disease."

David Stern, MD, vice president of health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine, says that education is the key to saving lives.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to the UC community and educate about the reality and dangers of heart disease," he says. "Being aware is sometimes the difference between life and death."

UC Health represents a collaborative partnership between the University of Cincinnati, University Hospital and University of Cincinnati Physicians.

Tuesday, February 9 has been designated as Go RED for Heart Night at the UC women's basketball game in Fifth Third Arena. Doors open at 6:00 pm and tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. when the Bearcats play Notre Dame. The first 1,000 fans will have a Bearcat red and white spirit shaker in their seat. UC College of Nursing students will be onhand on the east concourse from 6:00-8:00 pm to provide free blood pressure and BMI screenings. Fans will also have an opportunity to register for the American Heart Association's Mini-Marathon and Heart Walk, scheduled for March 28. Free Red dress pins will be provided to fans that register for the Heart Walk or receive a health screening.

Shooting contests and other in game activities will take place for fans to have the opportunity to win prizes. The UC Dance Team and Harrison High School Dance team will perform at halftime.
