PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST Conference announced its 2009-10 Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete Awards and University of Cincinnati senior track and field athlete Jasmine Cotten was announced as Cincinnati's winner. As a winner, Cotten will receive a postgraduate scholarship for winning the award.
Last season, Cotten was named the BIG EAST's Most Outstanding Field performer at the BIG EAST Championships after winning the pentathlon with an NCAA Automatic qualifying mark of 4,073 and placing fifth in the high jump. Cotten went on to compete at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the pentathlon and heptathlon, respectively.
Due to her success on the track during the 2008-09 school year, Cotten was recognized as the University of Cincinnati Women's Athlete of the Year.
This season, Cotten has picked up right where she left off last year with three NCAA Provisional qualifying marks in the indoor campaign. Cotten owns the second best pentathlon score in the nation this season after recording a score of 4,056 at the Golden Flashes Gala on Dec. 11, she is tied for 16th nationally in the high jump with a leap of 5' 10", and is tied for 24th nationally in the long jump with a mark of 20' 1-1/2".
Cotten is a psychology major and owns a 3.082 grade point average within her major. The Fayetteville, W.Va., native has twice been named to the Dean's list and was a BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team honoree in 2009.
