CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team was knocked off, 5-2, by West Virginia in the final match of the BIG EAST Conference opening weekend on Sunday (Feb. 28) at the Western Tennis and Fitness Center in Cincinnati.
Cincinnati fell behind early losing the doubles point 2-1. The Bearcats victory came from its No. 1 singles tandem of Safiyya Ismail and Lindsey Lonergan, 8-3.
UC picked up its two points of the match, winning the No. 1 and No. 5 singles matches. Sophomore Ksenia Slynko earned the win in the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. It was her fifth straight win in singles competition. Freshman Caitlin O'Gara picked up her sixth win of the season and her fourth in a row at No. 5 in a dramatic three-set win, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (14), 10-8.
The Bearcats (5-7, 1-1 BIG EAST) return to the courts next Saturday vs. in-state foe Akron at 10 a.m. at the Western Tennis and Fitness Center.
