DETROIT - Katie Kiriazoglou (Abingdon, Md./John Carroll) and MacKenzie Parsons (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) each scored two goals leading the University of Cincinnati (1-0) to a 10-6 season-opening victory at Detroit on Friday at Titan Field.
Detroit scored the first two goals of the game before Cincinnati took a timeout and regrouped. Laura Simanski (Reistertown, Md./Roland Park) scored UC's first goal on a free position attempt. Maddie Fink (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) tied the score at two with her first collegiate goal, also on a free position attempt. Rachel Mercier (Catonsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from Natalie Starvaggi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) to give UC a 3-2 advantage.
The Titans tied the game at three before Gabby Sinmaz (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) gave UC a 4-3 lead with a goal on a free position attempt. Parsons gave the Bearcats a two-goal cushion when she found the back of the net in traffic with 6:23 left in the first half. Kiriazoglou scored her first collegiate goal when she came from behind and zipped it mid-goal past the goalkeeper on the left side. Jenn Doran (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) scored on a free position attempt to give UC seven goals in the first half and a 7-3 advantage at halftime.
Detroit came out in the second half and scored two goals until Kiriazoglou scored her second goal of the game, spinning in front of the goal and sliding her shot into the net with 19:49 remaining. Detroit scored off of the next draw control, but would not score again for the game.
Parsons scored her second goal of the game with a jumping free position attempt that went to the opposite side of the goal and Katie Liberatore (Finksburg, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored her first collegiate goal after she caught a pass from Kiriazoglou and dove in front of the goal and managing to get the shot off and into the net.
Katherine Russo (Westminster, Md./Winters Mills) recorded seven saves in goal and earned the win for the Bearcats. UC had 52 ground balls to Detroit's 51 and forced the Titans into 30 turnovers.
Cincinnati will play next on Sunday, March 7 when they host Duquesne at 1 p.m. in Nippert Stadium.
