CINCINNATI - Coming off its first home weekend series of the 2010 season, the University of Cincinnati baseball team returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 10, when it welcomes LeMoyne College to Marge Schott Stadium for a 4 p.m. tilt.
Cincinnati took two-of-three games from Youngstown State in its first home series of the 2010 season last weekend, which included a walk-off sacrifice fly by senior Beach Brooks to cap off a 7-6 win in the series finale.
LeMoyne is in the midst of a Spring Break trip and opened the trip with a three-game series at No. 8 Louisville, and will play UC, Purdue, Evansville, and Morehead State in addition to playing Xavier on Tuesday, March 9.
Despite owning a 4-6 record heading into the week, the Dolphins have played six of their 10 games against Top 25 competition and two weekends ago, they went to Hattiesburg, Miss., and took two of three games from then-No. 21 Southern Miss.
Zach Wiley leads LeMoyne in hitting (.421), runs scored (11), and hits (16), while Chris Edmonson has a team-high eight RBI.
UC junior Mikel Huston recently was selected to the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Honor Roll after leading the Bearcats in hitting last weekend against Youngstown State. Huston led the team with a .727 average (8-of-11) against YSU and scored four runs, drove in four, and stole two bases. Huston now leads the team in hitting on the season with a .550 average.
Also against the Penguins, the Bearcats got great pitching performances in the opening game of the series from senior Brian Garman and freshman Logan Jackson. Garman pitched four innings of scoreless relief and struck out six to keep UC's deficit at four runs heading into the sixth inning. In the UC sixth, Jackson hit the first home run of his career, a grand slam to left field, which started a nine-run inning that eventually led to a 15-5 triumph.
Wednesday's pitching match-up pits a pair of southpaws as UC will send junior Josh Godfrey to the hill against Mark Kuzma for LeMoyne. It will be Godfrey's first start as a Bearcat.
