CINCINNATI- After sweeping both matches in the Las Vegas Challenge and extending its winning streak to three matches, the University of Cincinnati women's tennis team returns home to battle Dayton on Wednesday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The match will be held on campus at the Talbert-Trabert Tennis Center.
Cincinnati (8-9, 2-2 BIG EAST) defeated Southern Utah and Idaho State, 7-0 and 5-2, respectively in the Las Vegas Challenge (March 24-25). The Bearcats have now won six of their last nine matches, and during its current three-match winning streak, they have shutout their opponents twice.
UC is led by Ksenia Slynko, who has won four matches in a row and nine of her last 10 overall. Since moving to the No. 1 singles flight she is 9-1, with only two of those nine wins going to three sets. On the season, the sophomore from Ukraine is 13-4.
With the match at 3-2 against Idaho State, Safiyya Ismail, playing in the No. 2 flight, sealed the victory by winning in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, and 6-0. The sophomore from Maineville, Ohio is 6-4 in her last 10 matches and 7-10 on the season.
Elise Woulfe and Caitlin O'Gara continue their impressive freshmen seasons, with each compiling 10-7 records. Since moving to the No. 4 flight, Woulfe is 8-5, including 6-4 in her past 10 matches. O'Gara is 9-3 playing in the No. 5 spot, including 7-3 in her past 10 matches.
Ismail, O'Gara, and Woulfe all have three-match winning streaks in singles competition.
Strong doubles play has allowed UC to jump out early on its opponents during its current winning streak. In Las Vegas, the Bearcats did not drop a doubles match.
The duo of Ismail and junior Lindsey Lonergan are riding a three-match winning streak, and are 8-5 overall in the No. 1 doubles flight this season. Against Southern Utah and Idaho State, they were victorious, 8-3 and 8-4, respectively.
Slynko and Woulfe are 8-5 in the No. 2 doubles spot, while O'Gara and her partner, junior Abby Mayo, are 4-9, but have won three in a row, in the No. 3 doubles spot.
The Bearcats and Flyers met a season ago in Dayton, Ohio, with the Bearcats winning 7-0.
