BALTIMORE - Laura Simanski scored three goals for the University of Cincinnati (4-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) lacrosse team but the Bearcats lost, 16-6, to No. 13 Loyola University Maryland (8-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST contest on Saturday afternoon.
Cincinnati kept the score close with Simanski and Katie Liberatore scoring unassisted goals in the first nine minutes of the game. Natalie Starvaggi scored on a free position shot with 4:47 on the clock, making the score 5-3, but the Greyhounds scored the last four goals of the period, holding a 9-3 advantage at halftime.
Loyola tacked on two more goals before Simanski scored on a free position attempt in the second half. Simanski scored again, assisted by Katie Kiriazoglou, and Liberatore closed out the scoring for UC on a free position attempt with 3:48 left in the game. The Greyhounds scored two goals in between each of Cincinnati's last two goals and finished the scoring with 54 seconds remaining for the final score, 16-6.
Cincinnati was even with Loyola on draw controls (12) and had 16 less fouls (39-23). Katherine Russo had 17 saves in goal for the Bearcats.
UC returns to Nippert Stadium for its next game, playing on Friday, April 9, at 4 p.m. against Georgetown in a BIG EAST contest. Cincinnati and Georgetown will work together in conjunction with the charitable organization, Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ), to raise public awareness about pediatric brain tumors. Admission is free.
