CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team wraps up its five-game homestand on Wednesday, April 7, when it welcomes Morehead State University to Marge Schott Stadium for a mid-week, non-conference match-up beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Bearcats (13-12) will look to snap a two-game home skid on Wednesday, before returning to conference action April 9-11 at Seton Hall.
Last weekend, the Bearcats opened their three-game series against the USF Bulls with a 4-3 win, thanks to a late-inning rally against the then-reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Randy Fontanez.
However, Cincinnati dropped a 5-0 contest on Friday, before the Bulls captured the series with a 6-3 triumph on Saturday.
In the three-game series, junior Chris Peters led the squad with a .417 average (5-for-12) and moved his season average up to .289. Senior Brian Garman picked up the win for UC on Thursday night pitching 2.2 innings and striking out seven. The Wapakoneta, Ohio, native dropped his ERA to 1.48 on the season and moved his strikeout total to 33, both of which are tops on the squad.
Morehead State enters the week with a 17-14 overall record and a 1-2 record in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Eagles are on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in non-conference action last weekend in Morehead, Ky.
Eight MSU starters own batting averages above .300, led by J.D. Ashbrook's .426 clip. Ashbrook also leads the team with 12 home runs, while Drew Lee has chipped in 10 home runs and posts a team-best 47 RBI.
Despite being such a high-powered offense, the pitching staff of the Eagles has struggled this season as the group owns an ERA of 8.49.
UC will send freshman Thomas Gentile to the hill on Wednesday, while the Eagles will counter with Matthew Robertson. Robertson has made nine appearances, including two starts, on the season and has an ERA of 12.94 in 16.0 innings of action. Gentile has made five appearances this season, which also includes two starts, and brings an ERA of 7.80 in 15.0 innings of work.
