HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team played its final weekend of the regular season in Huntington, W.Va., and finished the year with a split, losing to No. 55 Marshall in a non-conference match on Saturday (April 10), 7-0, before evening its conference record at 3-3 on Sunday (April 11) with a close 4-3 win over Pittsburgh.
The Bearcats opened play Saturday versus its host for the weekend Marshall University. The Thundering came into the weekend ranked No. 55 in the nation and showed why with a 7-0 win over UC. The Herd won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in straight sets.
Looking to get back on track, get to .500 vs. league opponents, and hopefully secure a spot in the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship, the Bearcats regrouped on Sunday and faced BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh. The Panthers got out to the early lead in the match taking the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. UC's No. 2 team of Ksenia Slynko and Elise Woulfe picked up the only doubles win with an 8-5 victory.
Knowing they had to win four singles matches, the Bearcats bore down and fought throughout play. Other than Slynko's 7-5, 6-3 straight set win at No. 1, UC needed three sets in each win to secure of the overall match, 4-3. At No. 3 singles, Lindsey Lonergan rallied after losing the first set 6-7, winning the final two sets 6-4, 6-3. Freshmen Elise Woulfe, playing at No. 4, and Caitlin O'Gara at No. 5, each split their first two sets with their opponents before taking the third for their individual victories.
The match win moves Cincinnati's overall mark to 10-11 on the season and 3-3 in the league. The Bearcats close out the regular season on Tuesday, April 13, at home on campus at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center vs. crosstown rival Xavier University at 6 p.m.
